Hebrew Gematria Calculator
Type or paste Hebrew text to see its gematria in Mispar Hechrachi, Gadol, Katan and Siduri side by side, with every letter's value and a running total. Niqqud, cantillation, punctuation and English letters add nothing, and the calculator lists exactly which characters it skipped.
Vowel points, cantillation, punctuation, digits and English letters can stay in. They add nothing, and are listed under the results.

How to use it
- Enter the Hebrew text. A word, a name or a whole verse. Vowel points and cantillation marks can stay in.
- Choose the methods. All four are ticked to start. Untick any you don’t need.
- Read the totals. Each method gets its own number. Under them you’ll see how many letters, words and final letters were counted.
- Check the breakdown. The letter table shows every letter’s value and running total in each method. The last table lists what wasn’t counted.
What Hebrew gematria is
Gematria gives each Hebrew letter a number and adds the numbers up to get a value for a word or phrase. The same letter values are used as ordinary numerals in Hebrew. The Hebrew calendar year, for example, is written with letters.
What a total means is a matter of interpretation, and traditions differ. This page only does the arithmetic. It tells you which method it used and which characters it counted, so you can check the result against another source.
How Hebrew letters get their values
The 22 letters split into three groups of units, tens and hundreds, in alphabet order:
- Alef to tet are 1 to 9.
- Yod to tsadi are 10 to 90.
- Qof to tav are 100 to 400.
Five letters have a separate form used at the end of a word: ך ם ן ף ץ. How those final forms are counted is where the methods start to differ.

The four methods, and what each does with final letters
| Method | How it counts | Final letters ך ם ן ף ץ | מלך |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mispar Hechrachi (standard) | The values in the groups above | Same as the regular letter: 20, 40, 50, 80, 90 | 90 |
| Mispar Gadol (large) | Standard values for the 22 letters | Continue past 400: 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 | 570 |
| Mispar Katan (reduced) | Standard value with the zeros dropped, so 1 to 9 | Reduced from the standard value: 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 | 9 |
| Mispar Siduri (ordinal) | Place in the alphabet, 1 to 22 | Same place as the regular letter: 11, 13, 14, 17, 18 | 36 |
מלך is mem, lamed and final kaf, which is why it’s a handy test. Only the kaf changes between methods: 20 in the standard method, 500 in Mispar Gadol, 2 in Mispar Katan, and 11 in Mispar Siduri.
One variant to know about. For Mispar Katan, some calculators reduce the large value of a final letter, so ך becomes 5 instead of 2. This calculator always reduces the standard value and doesn’t mix the two. If another calculator gives a different Katan total for a word with a final letter, that’s the likely reason.
The calculator also counts characters exactly as they’re written. A final form keeps its final value even if it appears in the middle of a word, and a regular form at the end of a word keeps its regular value.
Which characters count
| Character | Counted? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| The 22 letters and 5 final forms | Yes | Given their value in each method |
| Niqqud: vowel points, dagesh, shin and sin dots | No | Ignored, and counted as marks |
| Cantillation marks (te’amim) and meteg | No | Ignored, and counted as marks |
| Precomposed letters such as שׁ or אַ as one character | Yes | Split into the letter and its mark first, so the letter still counts |
| Yiddish ligatures װ ױ ײ | Yes | Counted as their two letters: vav vav, vav yod, yod yod |
| Maqaf, sof pasuq, commas, full stops | No | Ignored, and they separate words |
| Geresh, gershayim and quote marks between two letters | No | Ignored, but abbreviations such as ר״ת stay one word |
| Spaces and line breaks | No | Separate words |
| English letters and digits | No | Ignored, and listed under the results |
Precomposed letters matter more than they sound. Pointed text copied from some Bible software uses single characters for a letter with its mark. One of the calculators ranking for this search drops those letters, and returns 76 for שלום typed that way instead of 376.
Worked examples
שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם
This is the example the Load an example button fills in. It’s pointed, so you can also see the marks being ignored.
| Word | Letters | Hechrachi | Gadol | Katan | Siduri |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| שלום | 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 | 376 | 936 | 16 | 52 |
| עליכם | 70 + 30 + 10 + 20 + 40 | 170 | 730 | 17 | 62 |
| Total | 9 letters | 546 | 1,666 | 33 | 114 |
Both words end in final mem. That’s why Mispar Gadol adds 560 to each word: the mem counts 600 instead of 40.
Genesis 1:1
Pasted with full vowel points and cantillation, the first verse of Genesis gives these standard values:
| Word | Hechrachi |
|---|---|
| בראשית | 913 |
| ברא | 203 |
| אלהים | 86 |
| את | 401 |
| השמים | 395 |
| ואת | 407 |
| הארץ | 296 |
| Total, 28 letters | 2,701 |
In Mispar Gadol the same verse is 4,631. אלהים and השמים each end in final mem (+560), and הארץ ends in final tsadi (+810).
Mixed text
Hello שלום 123! gives 376 in the standard method, the same as שלום on its own. The calculator lists the 11 characters it skipped: five Latin letters, three digits, one exclamation mark and two spaces.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate Hebrew gematria?
Give each letter its number and add them up. In the standard method, Mispar Hechrachi, שלום is shin 300 + lamed 30 + vav 6 + final mem 40, which is 376. Vowel points and other marks don't count, and neither do spaces.
What are the Hebrew letter values?
In the standard method, alef to tet are 1 to 9, yod to tsadi are 10 to 90, and qof to tav are 100 to 400. The five final forms ך ם ן ף ץ have the same value as their regular letters. All 22 letters add up to 1,495, or 1,775 with the five finals.
What is the difference between Mispar Hechrachi and Mispar Gadol?
Only the final letters. Mispar Gadol counts ך as 500, ם as 600, ן as 700, ף as 800 and ץ as 900, instead of 20, 40, 50, 80 and 90. So מלך is 90 in the standard method and 570 in Mispar Gadol.
What is Mispar Katan?
The reduced value. Drop the zeros from each letter's standard value, so every letter becomes 1 to 9: yod is 1, resh is 2, tav is 4. ישראל is 541 in the standard method and 10 in Mispar Katan. This calculator reduces final letters from their standard value, so ך is 2. Some calculators use the large value instead, which makes it 5.
What is Mispar Siduri?
The ordinal value: each letter's place in the alphabet, from alef 1 to tav 22. Final letters take their regular letter's place, so ם is 13 like מ. שלום is 21 + 12 + 6 + 13, which is 52.
Does niqqud change the gematria value?
No. Vowel points, dagesh, shin and sin dots, and cantillation marks aren't letters, so they add nothing. The first verse of Genesis, pasted with full vowel points and cantillation, still comes to 2,701. The calculator shows how many marks it skipped.
