What a Saturn return is

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go around the Sun. Seen from Earth, that means it slowly works its way through the whole zodiac and comes back to the same spot roughly every 29.5 years. Your Saturn return is when it reaches the exact point it was at when you were born.

In astrology, the first Saturn return, around 29, is linked with growing up: taking stock, making commitments, or ending things that no longer fit. The second, around 58, and the third, around 88, are read as later stages of the same cycle.

When is my Saturn return?

Everyone’s is at roughly the same age, because Saturn’s orbit sets the timing. These are the ages at the first exact return for births sampled across 1900 to 1999:

The span in which anyone born that year has Saturn within 3° of its birth position. Your own window is much shorter, 10.5 months on average, and the calculator gives the exact dates.

How long a Saturn return lasts

There’s no single answer, because it depends how close Saturn has to be. The calculator lets you choose, and these are the lengths for first returns across the same century of births:

When you see “a Saturn return lasts two and a half years”, that usually means the whole time Saturn spends in your Saturn sign.

Why there can be three exact dates

For a few months each year, Earth overtakes Saturn and Saturn appears to move backwards against the stars. This is called retrograde motion. If it happens near your natal Saturn, Saturn crosses that point going forwards, again going backwards, and a third time going forwards. About 38% of first Saturn returns in the sample had three exact dates. The results mark which pass happens while Saturn is retrograde.

Do you need your birth time and place?

Less than most calculators suggest. Where you were born makes no measurable difference to where Saturn is in the sky; the place only converts your local birth time into UTC. And Saturn moves so slowly that the time itself matters little.

When your birth time is unknown, the calculator works out the whole day and shows each date as a range. Across 279 sampled births, that range was under a day for half of all exact dates and under two days for 90% of them. With the place unknown as well, it was under a day and a half for half of them and under four days for 90%. The range only gets wider when Saturn was nearly standing still around your birth, and the results tell you if that applies to you.

How accurate it is

Saturn’s position comes from its orbital elements, corrected using NASA JPL Horizons, the ephemeris used for spacecraft navigation. On dates that weren’t used to fit the correction, positions from 1900 to 2200 agree with JPL to 0.23 arcminutes on average, and never by more than 0.8. Return dates checked against JPL, including two triple-pass returns, agree to within half an hour.

Positions are geocentric and tropical, which is what Western astrology uses. Dates are shown in UTC, so an exact moment late in the day may already be the next day where you live.

What the science says

The timing on this page is astronomy and can be checked. The meaning is astrology. Controlled tests, including a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, have not found that astrology predicts personality or life events. Plenty of people take stock around 30 for ordinary reasons. Use your Saturn return as a prompt for reflection if you find that helpful, not as a forecast.
