Half Birthday Calculator

This half birthday calculator shows the date six months after your birthday and the exact midpoint of your year, how many days are left, and the weekday for your next ten half birthdays.

Use this half birthday calculator to find the day you’re exactly halfway to your next birthday. Enter your date of birth and it gives the date, the day of the week, and how many days are left. It also shows something most tools skip: there are two ways to define a half birthday, and they usually land a day or two apart. You get both.

    About the half birthday calculator

A half birthday sounds simple until you try to pin it down. Is it six months after your birthday, or half a year? Those aren’t the same, because months aren’t the same length. And what about a birthday on August 31, when six months later would be February 31?

    • Both definitions, side by side. Six months on, and the exact midpoint of your year in days, with the gap between them.
    • End-of-month birthdays handled in the open. If your date doesn’t exist six months later, the calculator tells you which rule it used and what the other choice is.
    • A countdown. Days until the next one, and days since the last.
    • The day of the week. So you know if it’s a school night.
    • Your next ten. A table of the next ten half birthdays with the weekday and your age at each.
    • Leap-day birthdays. February 29 works.

It runs in your browser. Your date of birth isn’t sent anywhere or saved.

How to use the half birthday calculator

    1. Enter your date of birth. Use the date picker or type it. The year only affects the age shown.
    2. Read the headline. That’s your next half birthday by the six-month rule, with its weekday.
    3. Check the boxes below. Days to go, the exact midpoint, and your next full birthday.
    4. Scroll the table to plan further ahead.

It works for anyone’s birthday: a child’s, a partner’s, a pet’s adoption day. Any date in the past will do.

    What is a half birthday?

A half birthday is the day about six months before or after your birthday. It’s the point in the year when you’re as far from your birthday as you can get.

People use it for a few reasons. Children with birthdays in school holidays or near Christmas sometimes celebrate with classmates on the half birthday instead. Parents of babies mark six months as a milestone. And “four and a half” is a real age if you’re four and a half.

How to calculate a half birthday

There are two methods. The half birthday calculator shows both.

    Method 1: six months on

Keep the day of the month. Move the month forward by six.

Birthday month Half birthday month Example
January July January 15 and July 15
February August February 15 and August 15
March September March 15 and September 15
April October April 15 and October 15
May November May 15 and November 15
June December June 15 and December 15

The table reads both ways. A July 15 birthday has its half birthday on January 15.

This is the method almost everyone means. It’s easy to remember and it gives the same date every year.

    Method 2: the exact midpoint

Count the days from one birthday to the next and halve them. In an ordinary year that’s 365 / 2 = 182.5 days. When the stretch between two birthdays includes a February 29, it’s 366 / 2 = 183 days.

Half of 365 isn’t a whole number, so in an ordinary year the true midpoint falls at noon, 182 days after your birthday. The half birthday calculator reports the date that noon falls on.

This is the mathematically exact answer. It can shift by a day from year to year.

    Why the two methods disagree

Six calendar months aren’t always the same number of days. From March 15 to September 15 is 184 days. From September 15 to March 15 is 181, or 182 in a leap year. Neither is 182.5.

    Example: a July 5 birthday.

    • Six months on: January 5.
    • Exact midpoint: 182 days after July 5 is January 3.

Two days apart. Wikipedia and other references use the same example and get the same two dates.

How often do the methods agree? We checked every birthday in 2027. For 123 of the 365, both methods give the same day. For 122 the midpoint is a day later, and for 120 it’s a day earlier. So about two birthdays in three get two different answers. In other years the gap can reach two days, as the July 5 example shows.

Neither is wrong. Use six months on for parties and cards, since that’s what people expect. Use the midpoint if you want to say you are exactly halfway.

What day of the week it falls on

A date moves forward one weekday each year, because 365 days is 52 weeks and one day. After a February 29 it moves two. So your half birthday walks through the week and skips a day now and then.

Take the March 15 birthday again. The half birthday calculator lists its next few half birthdays as:

    Half birthday Day
    September 15, 2027 Wednesday
    September 15, 2028 Friday
    September 15, 2029 Saturday

It jumps from Wednesday to Friday because February 29, 2028 sits between the first two. That’s worth knowing if you’re planning a party a year or two out and hoping for a weekend.

Working it out in your head

You don’t need the half birthday calculator for the simple case. Two shortcuts cover it.

    • If your birthday is in January to June, add six to the month number. Month 3, March, becomes month 9, September.
    • If it’s in July to December, subtract six. Month 10, October, becomes month 4, April. The half birthday falls in the next calendar year.

Keep the day number the same. Then check the seven awkward dates in the table further down. If yours is one of them, use the last day of the month.

For the exact midpoint there’s no neat shortcut. Count 182 days on from your birthday, or 183 if a February 29 falls before your next birthday. That’s the part worth leaving to a calculator.

Birthdays that have no matching day

Six months after August 31 is “February 31”, which doesn’t exist. Seven dates run into this problem, and a half birthday calculator has to pick a rule for them.

Birthday Six months on would be Last day of the month Or the 1st of the next
    March 31 September 31 September 30 October 1
    May 31 November 31 November 30 December 1
August 29 February 29 February 28, or 29 in a leap year March 1 in an ordinary year
    August 30 February 30 February 28, or 29 in a leap year March 1
    August 31 February 31 February 28, or 29 in a leap year March 1
    October 31 April 31 April 30 May 1
    December 31 June 31 June 30 July 1

The half birthday calculator uses the last day of the month, which keeps the half birthday in the “right” month. It also shows the first-of-the-next-month date in a note, because plenty of people prefer that. There’s no official rule. Choose one and stick with it.

January 31 and July 31 aren’t on the list. July and January both have 31 days, so those birthdays swap neatly.

For an August 31 birthday, the exact midpoint lands on March 1. So if you like the midpoint method, March 1 is your date, and it agrees with the roll-forward rule.

    Leap-day birthdays

If you were born on February 29, your half birthday is August 29. There’s an August 29 every year, so your half birthday is more reliable than your birthday.

For the midpoint method, the calculator counts from February 28 in years without a leap day. That’s a convention. Some people born on leap day celebrate on March 1 instead, which would move the midpoint by a day.

How many days is half a year?

    Year between birthdays Days Half
    Ordinary 365 182.5 days
    Includes February 29 366 183 days

Which one applies depends on your birthday, not just the calendar year. If your birthday is March 15, the year from March 15, 2027 to March 15, 2028 contains February 29, 2028, so it’s 366 days long, even though it starts in 2027.

    Half birthday calculator examples

    A spring birthday

Born March 15. Six months on is September 15 every year. In 2027 that’s a Wednesday, in 2028 a Friday, and in 2029 a Saturday. The exact midpoint for the year starting March 15, 2027 is September 14, one day earlier, because that year is 366 days long.

A summer birthday that crosses the new year

Born July 5. The half birthday is January 5, in the following calendar year. The exact midpoint is January 3.

    A baby

A baby born on June 1 is six months old on December 1. The table then shows one and a half, two and a half, and so on. For babies, people count in months from the birth date, which is the six-months-on method.

A birthday on the last day of the year

Born December 31. There’s no June 31, so the half birthday is June 30. The roll-forward alternative is July 1, which is also the exact midpoint.

    Reading your result

    • Next half birthday. The six-months-on date, in full, with the weekday. If it’s today, the heading says so.
    • Days to go. Counted from today on your device.
    • Six months on. The date without the year. It’s the same every year unless your birthday is one of the seven above.
    • Exact midpoint. The date for the same year, with how many days it is from the six-month date.
    • Next birthday. For context, with its own countdown.
    • The table. Ten years of half birthdays. The weekday moves forward one day each year, or two after a leap day.

What people do with a half birthday

    • Summer and holiday birthdays. A child born in July or late December can bring treats to school on the half birthday, when classmates are around.
    • Shared birthdays. Twins, or siblings born days apart, can each get a day of their own.
    • Baby milestones. Six months is a common time for photos.
    • A reason for cake. Half a cake is a popular choice.

    Half birthdays and age cut-offs

Some rules use half years. School and sports sign-ups sometimes group children by “age on a certain date”, and some financial rules in the US use ages such as 59 and a half. For anything like that, don’t rely on a half birthday calculator, ours included. Those rules define the date their own way, usually by calendar months, and the paperwork will say which. Use this for parties and curiosity.

What the half birthday calculator doesn’t do

    • Time of birth. It works in whole days.
    • Time zones. “Today” is today on your device.
    • Other calendars. It uses the Gregorian calendar only.
    • Official ages. See the note on cut-offs above.

    Method and sources

Both methods are date arithmetic on the Gregorian calendar, shown step by step in the working. The two definitions, the 182.5 and 183 day figures and the July 5 example are described in Wikipedia’s “Half-birthday” article. The last-day-of-the-month rule for dates that don’t exist is the one Omni Calculator states for its own tool. The count of how often the methods agree is ours, from checking every birthday in 2027.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my half birthday?

Keep the day of the month and move the month forward by six. A March 15 birthday has a half birthday on September 15. A July 5 birthday has one on January 5 of the next year.

Is a half birthday exactly six months or exactly half a year?

They are different things. Six months on keeps the same day of the month. Half a year is 182.5 days, or 183 when the year between birthdays has a leap day. For a July 5 birthday, six months on is January 5 and the exact midpoint is January 3. Across all birthdays in 2027, the two land on the same day for 123 of 365.

When is my half birthday if I was born on August 31?

There is no February 31, so the usual answer is the last day of February: the 28th, or the 29th in a leap year. Some people use March 1 instead. August 29 and 30 have the same problem in most years. Pick one rule and keep it.

When is the half birthday of someone born on February 29?

August 29, every year. A leap-day birthday only comes round every four years, but there is always an August 29, so the half birthday never goes missing.

How many days is half a year?

182.5 days in an ordinary year and 183 in a leap year. Because half of 365 is not a whole number, the true midpoint of an ordinary year falls at noon, 182 days after your birthday.

Which other birthdays have no matching day six months later?

The 31st of March, May, October and December, because September, November, April and June have 30 days. Their half birthdays fall on the 30th. January 31 and July 31 are fine: July and January both have a 31st.
