How to Convert YouTube to MP3 Legally

You can convert YouTube to MP3 legally when you start from a file you’re allowed to have. That means your own uploads, downloaded from YouTube Studio, music from the YouTube Audio Library, or a file or permission from whoever made the video. Pasting someone else’s link into a download site isn’t one of those routes.

This guide covers what YouTube allows, the routes that work, and how to turn your own video into an MP3 without uploading it anywhere.

What YouTube’s terms say

YouTube’s Terms of Service (effective 5 January 2022) say you may not access, reproduce or download any part of the service or its content, with two exceptions:

• where the service expressly authorizes it, like a Download button YouTube gives you, or
• with prior written permission from YouTube and, where it applies, the rights holder.

These are YouTube’s rules, separate from copyright law, which depends on where you live and what you’re copying. Following the terms keeps you on the safe side of both. This guide is not legal advice.

The legal routes, one by one

Your own uploads: YouTube Studio

YouTube lets creators download their own uploads as MP4 files. On a computer:

1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
2. Select Content from the left menu.
3. Find the video, open its menu, and choose Download.

This only works for videos on your own channel. It isn’t a way to download other people’s videos.

Your whole channel: Google Takeout

To back up many uploads at once, use Google Takeout and select YouTube. You get your uploaded videos as files, and you can convert any of them.

Music for your videos: the YouTube Audio Library

The Audio Library in YouTube Studio offers free music and sound effects. Tracks download as MP3 already, so there’s nothing to convert. Each track has its own license. Some require you to credit the artist, and the library lets you filter for tracks that don’t.

Someone else’s video: ask

Many musicians, podcasters and teachers publish the same audio elsewhere, or will send you a file for a good reason. Written permission from the rights holder is the route YouTube’s terms name. With it, and a file from them, convert away.

YouTube Premium: offline, but not a file

Premium downloads play offline inside the YouTube and YouTube Music apps. They’re stored encrypted for the app, not as a video or audio file you can open, move or convert. If offline listening is all you need, this is the simplest route. If you need an MP3, it isn’t.

Convert your own video to MP3, step by step

1. Download the video from YouTube Studio, as above. You get an MP4 file.
2. Open the YouTube to MP3 Converter and choose the MP4.
3. Leave the quality at 192 kbps, or choose up to 320 kbps. Trim the start and end if you only want part.
4. Select Convert to MP3, listen to the preview, and download it.

The conversion runs in your browser. Your video is never uploaded, which matters for unpublished or private uploads.

Why link-based “YouTube to MP3” sites are different

A site that turns a pasted link into an MP3 downloads the audio from YouTube itself. That doesn’t fit either exception in YouTube’s terms. It also means working around the way YouTube protects its streams. That is the reason these sites get blocked, break without warning, or disappear after legal action.

There’s a practical side too. You’re downloading a file from a site you know nothing about, often through ads, redirects and “download” buttons that aren’t the real one. Converting a file you already have avoids all of that.

Once you have the MP3

Having a legal file doesn’t make everything inside it yours to reuse. If your own video includes licensed music, the license you had for the video may not cover sharing that music as a standalone MP3. The same goes for Audio Library tracks: follow the track’s license and attribution requirement.

Is it illegal to convert YouTube to MP3?

It depends on what you convert and where you live. Converting your own uploads, or a file you have permission to use, is fine. Separately from copyright law, YouTube’s terms don’t allow downloading content unless YouTube offers the download or you have permission from YouTube and the rights holder. Link-based converters sit outside those terms.

Can I download my own YouTube videos as MP3?

Are YouTube to MP3 websites safe?

Link-based sites are unknown third parties serving you files, usually alongside ads and redirects. Converting a file you already have, in your own browser, avoids that entirely: nothing is uploaded and nothing is fetched from YouTube.

Does converting to MP3 lower the quality?

Slightly, because MP3 is a compressed format. At 192 kbps most people can’t tell, and 320 kbps is the highest MP3 setting. Converting can’t add detail the original video’s audio didn’t have.
